Treating the whole person - body, mind and spirit

A healing environment enhances quality clinical care. Sights and sounds, colors and textures, all come together to create comfortable and familiar surroundings that nourish the whole person - body, mind, and spirit. It is a progressive way of envisioning healthcare delivery where the environment supports healing and reduces stress in the lives of patients and their families.

Our recently remodeled facility provides patients and families with state-of-the-art technology in a beautiful, healing setting. All inpatient rooms are private and spacious, with large windows and a foldout couch. They were designed to meet the needs of patients as well as patient care staff.

Visitor break areas and lounges are stress-reducing and spacious as well. There are comfortable lounges on each floor throughout the hospital. To protect the health of patients, staff, and visitors, the entire Rice campus is smoke-free.

Original art is intentionally placed throughout the hospital with its intended audience in mind. Art in the pediatrics area is much different than adult health, or even obstetrics. The art is by local artists and artists with local ties, using subjects and scenes found in our region. Art was selected for its ability to soothe, calm, or provide a positive distraction for patients and families. It is also used throughout the hospital to help with way finding.

In addition to art pieces, connections to nature abound through natural light, plants, fish tanks, and the soothing sounds of water indoors and out.

Inside, the sounds from a beautiful water feature is the focus of our garden court area, where natural light pours from a wall of windows above. comfortable seating fills the welcoming space.

Outside the main entrance, a healing garden was created with fuding raised through empoyee contributions. It is a peaceful area where patients and staff visit to reflect and enjoy being outdoors.

Another reflective space to feed the spirit is in the hospital's non-denominational chapel. it is open to everyone at all times.

To nourish the body, a cafe offers a variety of hot and cold options daily for staff and visitors.

An attractive area adjacent to the cafe provides seating. There are also cafe tables in the garden court and picnic tables located in several outdoor areas.

Patients are provided with a spoken menu bedside that offers choices to match their dietary needs.

Supporting a healthy mind, the Community Health Library at Rice is open to patients, visitors, and family members. Resources include volunteer assistance, books, magazines, newslettters, medical journals, as well as computer use and internet access.

How are we doing?

Rice uses Press Ganey, an independent agency, to mail Patient Satisfaction Surveys and measure the results. Depending on the service, 25% to 100% of the patients receive a survey.

They rank answers to questions on a scale of 1 to 5. A weighted mean score (the average of responses) is compared to more than 1,000 hospitals nationwide.

Click the date below to see where Rice ranked in the 90th percentile or above when compared to other national hospitals surveyed during that time period.
