Cancer patients are expressing an increasing interest in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Recent surveys indicate that 70% of all people with cancer are using CAM therapies and 80% of all cancer patients want more information about these approaches; and they want it from a trusted, reliable, authoritative source.

CAM describes a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices and products that are not considered to be a part of conventional medicine. Although, there is scientific evidence for the effectiveness and safety of some CAM therapies, many of these therapies have not been scientifically tested.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) currently funds several research protocols on CAM therapy.

In August 2002, I attended CancerGuides. This exceptional conference is conducted by the cancer for Mind-Body Medicine. Over the course of a week, it explores many CAM therapies.

Subsequently, we have been integrating into our practice CAM therapies that are scientific and evidence based. We specifically address nutrition and mind-body techniques with our patients. A pilot study in massage therapy is ongoing.

These initiatives have been well received by patients and we look forward to expanding as our knowledge increases.
