I am pleased to introduce this report for the Rice Memorial Hospital Cancer Program for the calendar year 2005. New developments this year included more active exploration of a joint cancer center with Affiliated Community Medical Centers and Rice Memorial Hospital, with an attempt to consolidate services in one location.

Another unique initiative was participation in the phase III study of Sorafenib, which has proven to be a very effective treatment for renal adenocarcinoma. With the progress in hospital construction, it has become possible to have our American Cancer Society Navigator on site, and this has resulted in significant increase in patients served. Another highlight of the year was our programs participation in a mind/body/spirit retreat for cancer survivors, and this was well received by those in attendance. Many of these initiatives will continue into the future and make for an exciting program.

The cancer committee continued to meet quarterly during calendar year 2005. A good portion of the activity early in the year 2004 was centered upon preparation for the American College of Surgeons Approval Committee visit in July. This presented extra challenge because of a change in format for the evaluation, but we were granted a full three year approval with several areas of commendation.

The cancer committee did coordinate our participation in the Relay for Life activities in both Kandiyohi and Renville Counties, and has welcomed our American Cancer Society Navigator, Kris Johnson, as a member of the committee.

Discussions are ongoing regarding a consolidated cancer center. The committee looks forward to an active and interesting 2006.

J. Michael Ryan, M.D.
