Rice Hospital offers three types of intern experiences:

  1. Summer Health Care Internships for college students pursuinig healthcare careers.
  2. Pharmacy Internships and Externships for pharmacy students during the entire year.
  3. Summer Nursing Intern Program for BSN/BAN nursing students.

The internships for Summer Health Care Interns and Summer Nursing Interns is from mid-June to mid-August. Internships in all three programs are paid positions. An application packet for either of these programs must be requested by November 15 for the following summer. To request an application packet, see below.

Summer Health Care Internship

The Summer Health Care Internship offers college students an overview of the services and operations of a regional referral health care organization. Students receive one or more work assignments depending on the needs of the organization and the student's college major, background and experience. Work may relate to:

  • Dierct patient care
  • Service delivery
  • Program development and support
  • Phlebotomy
  • Histology
  • Operative services
  • Computer systems

In addition, students have the opportunity to observe a variety of medical procedures, patient care and support encounters. Applicants must have completed at least one year of post-secondary education in a healthcare or related field. They must also be in good academic standing.

Pharmacy Clinical Experience

Rice Memorial Hospital Pharmacy Department offers both internship and externship programs for eligible pharmacy students. Students are offered externship rotations at Rice in general hospital practice and ambulatory care. Externships are available for pharmacy students during the entire year. An internship is usually offered every summer and is a paid position. Summer Nursing Intern Program

The Summer Nursing Intern Program is an opportunity for nursing students (BSN, BAN), between their junior and senior years, to participate in a learning and work experience to provide the connection between education and real life practice.
Under the direction of a preceptor, interns further their understanding of the practice of professional nursing.  Opportunities are available in a variety of areas at Rice including:

  1. Adult Health Care
  2. Ambulatory Care
  3. ICCU
  4. Surgical Services
  5. Women and Children’s Care (includes OB)
  6. Emergency Services

In addition, students have the opportunity to observe in other areas.

Eligibility
Interns must:

  1. Have completed their junior year in a baccalaureate nursing program;
  2. Have at least a 3.0 GPA in their nursing courses; and
  3. Be enrolled in a summer internship course through a participating Minnesota college or university.

Program Dates
Completed application packets must be received by December 5, 2008.  Incomplete packets will not be reviewed.
Interview dates are Monday, January 5 and Tuesday, January 6, 2009.  Selected applicants must be able to interview in person. The program starts on June 8, 2009 and runs for ten weeks..

Hours
Interns will be scheduled between 64 and 72 hours per two week pay period.  Interns will work the same hours as their preceptor, including rotating shifts and weekends.
