The Summer Health Care Internship offers college students an overview of the services and operations of a regional referral health care organization. Students receive one or more work assignments depending on the needs of the organization and the student's college major, background and experience. Work may relate to:
- Dierct patient care
- Service delivery
- Program development and support
- Phlebotomy
- Histology
- Operative services
- Computer systems
In addition, students have the opportunity to observe a variety of medical procedures, patient care and support encounters.
Applicants must have completed at least two years of post-secondary education in a healthcare or related field. They must also be in good academic standing.

The Summer Nursing Intern Program is an opportunity for nursing students (BSN, BAN), between their junior and senior years, to participate in a learning and work experience to provide the connection between education and real life practice.
Under the direction of an RN preceptor, interns further their understanding of the practice of professional nursing. Opportunities are available in a variety of areas at Rice including:
- Adult Health Care
- ICCU / ER
- Peri-Operative Services
(ACD, OR, PACU)
- Float Pool
- Women and Children’s Care (includes OB)
In addition, students have the opportunity to observe in other areas for several shifts toward the end of the internship.

Rice Memorial Hospital Pharmacy Department offers both internship and externship programs for eligible pharmacy students.
Students are offered externship rotations at Rice in general hospital practice and ambulatory care. Externships are available for pharmacy students during the entire year.
An internship is usually offered every summer and is a paid position.

Nursing Interns must:
- Have completed their junior year in a baccalaureate nursing program;
- Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA;
- Be enrolled in a summer internship course through a participating Minnesota college or university; and,
- Have current CPR certification.
If you are attending a college or university outside the State of Minnesota, you will need to enroll in a summer internship course through a Minnesota college or university, and be supervised by a nursing faculty member licensed in Minnesota.
The summer internship class has been offered in the past at St. Cloud and Mankato State. Please check directly with these and other colleges about their course offerings.
The Minnesota Board of Nursing requires that in order for a person to practice nursing in the state, they either have to be licensed as an RN or LPN or be under the supervision of an instructor licensed in the state.

Please note new due date: completed application packets must be received by Friday, December 9, 2011. Incomplete packets will not be reviewed. It is the responsibility of the student to check to make sure that Rice has received all pieces of the application.
Intern interviews will take place on Thursday, December 29, 2011, and Monday, January 2, 2012. Selected applicants must be able to interview in person on one of those dates.
The program runs from June 4, 2012, through August 10, 2012.
Interns will be scheduled 64 hours per two-week pay period. Interns will work the same hours as their preceptor (8-hour or 12-hour shifts), including rotating shifts and weekends. |
