"I really liked that the preceptor program was available here - I wouldn't choose a hospital without one. My preceptor definitely helped me get used to the floor and my surroundings. She introduced me to staff and directors. She made sure I wasn't missing anything. It was nice to have that extra person there for asking questions.
"Everyone we work with is very pleasant and willing to help out. I like working in the medical field and taking care of people. The best part about being a nurse is seeing your patients get better and make progress toward their goals." |
"I was able to shadow before coming to Rice and that experience told me it was the right hospital for me. Everyone was so happy and proud of their organization. It is large enough to have state-of-the-art technology, yet small enough to remain patient-centered.
"Making the transition from school to the real world, it's important to have support and Rice really makes the effort to do that. It's wonderful to know someone's here for you - you're not thrown out on your own. There are always new things you're coming across and having that support is priceless." |
"When I graduated from nursing school, I was glad to find a place at Rice. I like the larger hospital and the positive attitude I find here. It's a nurturing and supportive environment. Everybody always aks, 'Can I help you? Can I show you this?'
"When you have a good preceptor program like Rice does, it's really going to help you get your career off to a good start. They individualize the program to meet each new nurse's needs. There's a lot of good team work here - they help you succeed by guiding you, educating you, and supporting you." |
"I grew up in Renville / Redwood Falls and I always knew I would come back to the area after graduating. Rice has a lot of the technologies of a much bigger hospital, but with a small community feeling.
"They give you the freedom to learn here, but are there to support you when you have questions. It's a process, a steady increase in patient load as well as an introduction to technology - how to use it and how to work with it." |
| Here's what you can look forward to when you accept a Nurse Residency position at Rice |
| Week One |
Week Two |
Week Three |
Weeks Two through Six |
| Following general orientation on Monday, you spend the rest of the week with Nurse Educators. Friendly and supportive instructors provide you with hands-on equipment training, and in-house experts, such as a Pharmacist and an Information Systems Analyst, share their knowledge with you. |
You begin your career on the floor in Adult Health Care, a medical/
surgical unit. This unit provides you with a great environment to learn how to prioritize and develop your skills. On the first day you shadow an experienced nurse to discover where everything is and how the department functions as a unit. You also meet your preceptor and receive your first patient. |
It's Bring Back Day where you head back to the classroom for eight hours. You learn more protocols from a board-certified medical/
surgical nurse who is master's prepared. Here's your opportunity to ask the questions you didn't know to ask the first week! Experts, such as a Wound, Ostomy and Continence nurse, provide specialized training. You also receive more hands-on equipment training. |
Your patient responsibility gradually increases as you feel ready. When you become comfortable with one patient, you receive a second patient, then a third patient, and possibly a fourth. You have time to adjust and prepare for each additional patient. Your preceptor is available to you the entire time. |

"I remember going through nursing school and orientation at another hospital, and I wanted to share my experience with people and hopefully give them a good experience. I like being able to get to know the new nurses one-on-one and sharing information.
"I tell them that I'm still learning new things every day. I moved to Willmar in 2004 and it's a really family-based place to live. There's a sense of community. The people at Rice are friendly and helpful - like a big family." |
"I did a summer internship at Rice and liked it here. The people I worked with were really great. Because I had such good mentoring, I thought it would be nice to help someone else, too. I can relate to and remember those times and questions.
I like to meet new staff and help them problem solve through issues they're having as a new nurse. We have a strong team here - we rely on each other and help each other through things.
I love the rural area and the lakes, and larger cities are close by. |
