Rural Health School

Since the fall of 1997, Willmar and Rice Hospital have been a community site for the Minnesota Rural Health School (MRHS). MRHS is the only program in the state that offers students rural interdisciplinary training.

The MRHS recruits students from a variety of disciplines including medicine, nursing, physician assistant, pharmacy, public health and social work. The goal is to have three of more disciplines represented at each site, learning and working together as a interdisciplinary team.

The Minnesota Rural Health School provides students an opportunity to:

• learn about the culture, dynamics, health needs, and health care systems of rural communities
• understand the roles and contributions of health care team members from different disciplines and professions
• experience interdisciplinary team care in providing care to individuals, families, and the community
• learn how community partnerships contribute to health promotion in rural communities
• learn how to use electronic communication technologies for education and patient care
• strengthen their intentions to work in a rural area
