Student Experiences Rice Memorial Hospital is a hospital dedicated to the education of those entering the field of health care. With a service area that encompasses 14 counties and provides care to over 220,000 patients, Rice is an excellent clinical setting for many students. The School of Radiologic Technology is a two-year accredited degree program. It accepts six students each year to receive clinical training at Rice and coursework at Ridgewater Community College. The Rice Regional Dental Clinic has been established as a collaborative effort between Rice Memorial Hospital and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in order to educate dental students. The Dental Clinic is equipped with ten dental chairs and state-of-the-art dental equipment. Four dental students and one dental hygiene spend a one-month rotation through the clinic on a year-round basis. Rice and the Willmar community have recently been chosen as the Southern site for the Academic Health Education Center for the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center. The AHEC is a federal/state cooperative agreement that aims to educate students of health professions in medically underserved areas of the state. The AHEC is a collaborative effort with other communities in the region to promote existing health programs and to bring community and University interests together to address healthcare workforce concerns in the region. Because at Rice we feel that we must invest in the workforce of tomorrow, we have developed several student internships. These internships are designed to provide a connection between education and real life practice in the hospital setting.
