Throughout the year, the Rice Education Center, along with many other departments within the hospital, offer health education classes and events for the public.

All classes are free (unless otherwise noted) and take place either on our main campus or at one of our other Rice facilities.

Camp G.K. Bear

Aware of the great need for grief support for children in West Central Minnesota, The Grief Center at Rice Memorial Hospital offers a multi-site summer grief camp for kids in grades 1-6 called Camp G.K. Bear

Gillette Clinic

Since the fall of 1998, Willmar has been an outreach site for the Gillette Clinic's Technology Center.

Traveling in specially equipped trucks, staff members from the Gillette Technology Center bring assistive technology services to the clinic sites. The staff members include certified orthotists, certified assistive technology practitioners, seating specialists, adaptive equipment specialists and rehabilitation engineers.

The Gillette staff evaluate the needs of the clients for orthoses, prostheses, seating and adaptive equipment.

Infant Massage

Massage is a form of bonding and communication between you and your baby. Its benefits include improved weight gain, muscle tone, quality of sleep and digestion. As infant massage becomes more popular, it is important that the information parents receive is complete, safe and accurate.

Terry Stezel, RN, infant massage therapy instructor at Rice Rehabilitation Center, is offering a series of infant massage classes for new parents. The cost of the four classes is $20, which includes all materials and oils.

Life Connections

Life Connections is dedicated to helping mature adults explore lifestyle and resource opportunities for "living to the max". This two day event will provide attendees a multitude of active, healthy, and independent opportunities available to them.

  • Exhibits--A trade show of interesting booths will provide attendees with vital information on travel, housing, health, recreation, legal issues and finance.
  • Education--Entertaining and professionally delivered seminars relevant to a mature audience.
  • Entertainment--A variety of theatrical and musical performances by talented local and regional entertainers.
  • Dates for Life Connections for 2004 are yet to be determined

Pre-Dialysis Education Program

At Rice we also offer one-on-one counseling and information through our Pre-Dialysis Education Program. This is for any person who will need dialysis in the future, regardless of where treatment will be provided.

The client and their family meet with Social Services, Dietary, and Nursing staff by appointment. A nephrologist is also available by appointment.

The program allows:

  • Time to acquaint the patient with various modes of treatment
  • Provide dialysis access information
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Avoidance of potential nephrotoxic drugs
  • Potential for financial support for services
  • Opportunity to introduce the client to peers already on dialysis

Prenatal Education for Teens Program (PET)

The PET program provides parent and family education for pregnant adolescents and their partners. The program teaches these young women and their partners:

  • About the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy
  • Preparation for labor and delivery
  • How to care for the baby
  • Basic safety for children
  • What being a parent means
  • The importance of involvement by the father

Pre-Operative Joint Replacement Class

Rice offers a preadmission class on total joint replacement surgery. The class provides information on what to expect from the surgery, pre-op strengthening exercises and how to prepare for a quick and health recovery.

The program is held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm. The class usually lasts from 11/2 to 2 hours. It is best to attend class within about 2 weeks of your scheduled surgery.

Reach to Recovery

Reach to Recovery is a peer support program for people with a personal concern about breast cancer. Reach to Recovery uses carefully selected and trained volunteers who have fully adjusted to their breast cancer surgery treatment. A patient and volunteer may meet face to face or by telephone.

Volunteers are able to provide support and up-to-date information, including literature for spouses, partners, children, other loved ones, and friends. They can even provide a temporary breast form and information on types of permanent prostheses, when appropriate, and lists of where they are available locally.
