WILLMAR, MN (April 2014) – On Tuesday, April 22, Rice Memorial Hospital, along with Affiliated Community Medical Centers and Family Practice Medical Center, will host a free public information session titled “Let’s Discuss It Over Dinner.” The discussion will center around the importance of having a health care directive or “living will” and will be facilitated by trained volunteers who will guide participants through the planning process. The ultimate goal is to encourage individuals to start their own conversations with family members and loved ones.
“No one wants to think about dying,” said Jessica Vagle, Director of Adult Health Services and Care Management at Rice. “But it’s probably one of the most important conversations most people have never had. This free information session will give people the tools they need to get started.”
Advance care planning is a guided conversation about end-of-life wishes, values, and preferences. Once that initial conversation takes place between loved ones, the next step is to put it in writing. This written document is called a health care directive. It tells physicians and caregivers how to care for a patient when that person is no longer able to make health decisions for him or herself. It also appoints a person to make health care decisions on his or her behalf.
“The health care directive is an important part of a person’s medical record,” said Dr. Ken Flowe, Chief Medical Officer for Rice Memorial Hospital. “In the event of a serious accident or health emergency, physicians need to know how to respond.”
Honoring Choices Minnesota is a statewide initiative that aims to encourage all Minnesotans age 18 and over to complete a health care directive. A downloadable copy of the form is available in several different languages on their web site at www.HonoringChoices.org.
