Rice Rehab offers a one-day Multiple Sclerosis Assessment Clinic. The individual's day will involve a complete and thorough assessment in several areas and disciplines, such as: occupational, physical and speech therapies; social services; pharmacy; dietary/nutrition; nursing; and massage therapy for relaxation and stress reduction. Family and friends are welcome to attend the clinic with the individual. Morning snack and lunch are provided.

Occupational Therapy Assessment:

• Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite (MSFC)
• Sensation
• Coordination
• Tremor
• Reciprocal motion upper extremities
• Hand writing
• Hand prehensions; isolated finger control
• Grip strength
• Activities of daily living tasks
• Adaptive equipment needs
• Cognitive skills
• Energy conservation

Physical Therapy Assessment:

• Stretching/Range of motion exercises
• Strengthening exercises
• Moving, walking, balance
• Flexibility - neck and shoulder range of motion; ankle motion
• General mobility - including getting in and out of bed or chair
• Fall prevention/balance strategies
• Gait assessment
• Posture awareness and exercises - standing and sitting
• Habituation exercises for dizziness/vertigo

Speech Therapy Assessment:

• Posture for speech and swallowing
• Communication
• Saliva control
• Swallowing proficiency and safety
• Cognition
• Changes in voice and speech

Social Services Assessment:

• Living environment
• Support groups and systems
• Available community resources
• Financial resources
• Adjustment to illness/diagnosis

Pharmacy Assessment:

• Review of medication regimen
• Assessment of compliance
• Discussion of side affects
• Discussion of over the counter, vitamins, and other medications

Dietary/Nutrition Assessment:

• Calcium intake
• Fluid intake
• Fiber intake
• Weight loss

Nursing Assessment:

• Multiple Sclerosis education
• Early signs and symptoms
• Physical changes
• Pain
• Sleep pattern changes
• Bowel changes
• Sexuality changes
• Cognitive changes
• Mind/Body approaches

A physician's referral is needed for an individual to attend the clinic, and insurance will be billed.

The Multiple Sclerosis Assessment Clinic is scheduled for the 2nd Wednesday of each month.
