What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy is part of a treatment plan for many illnesses and is used to manage conditions where speech, language, eating or swallowing is affected. Speech therapists evaluate and treat concerns that relate to your ability to use language and voice to communicate. They also conduct swallow evaluations to determine safety-appropriate food and liquid consistency for people with swallowing problems.

Who can benefit from Speech Therapy?

Speech therapists can help all ages, from children to older adults. They may focus on developmental, cognitive, physical, or psychological needs. You or a family member may benefit from speech therapy if there are challenges and concerns with communication and swallowing concerns, such as:

  • aphasia
  • dysphasia
  • cognitive disorders
  • swallowing difficulties
  • developmental language delays
  • speech sound difficulties
  • voice issues
  • stuttering
  • pronounced foreign accent

Perhaps you've had a stroke, or been diagnosed with Parkinson's or another neurological disorder. Perhaps a child has developmental delays in communicating.

Speech therapists use computerized voice output, swallowing X-rays, communication therapies, and computer programs to help patients.

What causes communication problems?

The most common causes of communication problems in adults are related to:

  • Stroke
  • Brain tumors
  • Parkinson's disease
  • ALS
  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Stuttering
  • Mental Retardation
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Tracheostomy Placement
  • Voice disorders including vocal nodules
  • Dependence on a ventilator for breathing
  • Other progressive neuromuscular diseases

What services are provided by speech therapists?

  • Evaluation of communication and swallowing or feeding disorders.
  • Treatment of communication and swallowing and/or feeding disorders.
  • Counseling of patients and their caregivers/family on the nature of the disorder.
  • Education of patients and their caregivers/family on how to maximize communicative success.
