If you are experiencing a life-threatening injury or illness, please dial 9-1-1.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

You will see changes in the family waiting room related to the current flu season in an effort to keep people well. The ER Waiting Room is now separated into two sides - one to be used by those with flu symptoms and one to be used by patients without flu symptoms. Chairs and signs will indicate which side is which. People with flu symptoms are asked to use the mask and hand sanitzer provided and to cover coughs.

During this time, only one significant person will be allowed to go into the ER with the patient. Families will be encourged to not remain in the waiting room, but to instead leave one person with their loved one and have the rest of the family return home.

The staff and patients at Rice Hospital appreciate your understanding and cooperation of these emergency policies. It is our goal to protect patients and prevent the spread of illness.

Visiting our Emergency Room (ER)

Rice Emergency Services is located at the East end of Rice Memorial Hospital. We are open 24 hours a day. Parking is available for ER patients and families near the ER entrance on Becker Ave. There is a drive-in area available for emergencies on the East side of the hospital, off of 2nd Street.

Symptoms of an acute medical emergency

Although at Rice we treat any medical condition, whether it be major or minor, some common symptoms that could signal an acute medical emergency include:

  • chest pain
  • difficulty breathing
  • acute pain
  • cuts or large abrasions
  • possible broken bones
  • stroke symptoms including: slurred speech, severe headaches or weakness on one side of the body
  • any condition that you feel is a medical emergency

When to consult your physician

For everyday illnesses and conditions which you believe are not serious enough to visit Rice's Emergency Room, contact your physician. Your physician can advise you as to whether a trip to the emergency room is necessary. If you do not currently have a personal physician, we would encourage you to develop a relationship with one with whom you feel comfortable and confident.
