The "WOC" nurse specializes in the care of patients who have wounds, ostomies and continence. The nurse provides wound and ostomy consultations, assessment of the patient, and reviews the options for management problems with the patient, recommending a plan of care which includes supplies and equipment.

Self care teaching of new ostomy patients is a major focus of the practice. WOC Nursing services are available to outreach facilities on an as needed basis.

The WOC nurse is an RN certified in wound, ostomy and continence care. The nurse is available to provide ostomy clinics, help begin support groups, and do workshops and presentations on wound or ostomy care upon request. The WOC nurse has presented workshops on topics such as ostomy care, pressure ulcers, skin and wound care in the cancer patient, basic wound care and AHCPR guidelines to outreach health care providers and community groups.
