Rice Diabetes & Nutrition Center

Mission:
"To promote the health and well-being of those with diabetes as well as those at risk for the development of diabetes.."

Founded on the belief that quality, comprehensive diabetes care requires informed patients working with knowledgeable, concerned health professionals in a planned system of care, the Rice Diabetes & Nutrition Center, helps people diagnosed with Diabetes live full and meaningful lives. The Center offers programs for people of all ages and in all stages of their diagnosis.

Just Diagnosed

These programs are offered year-round and are designed to meet you where you are--the beginning! Family members and significant others are encouraged to attend.

  • Type 2 Diabetes BASICS
    Lead by a nurse/dietitian team, this program is for adults who are not taking insulin
  • Insulin BASICS
    This program is designed for adults just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who are just staring to use insulin
  • Kids & Teens
    IDC offers comprehensive diabetes care and education for children and teens. To make an appointment call:
  • Gestational Diabetes
    Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose (sugar) during the second half of pregnancy. If you've just learned you have gestational diabetes, you may have many questions. We offer care and education that will enable you to have both a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Ongoing Care

We offer basic and in-depth education programs on diabetes self-managment, insulin management, and heart health so that you can confidently take control of your health.

  • Intensified Management
    This unique, week-long program will give you new skills and confidence for managing your diabetes every day. Through working with a team of doctors, nurses, dietitians and psychologists, you will gain in-depth knowledge about all aspects of diabetes care: food planning, increasing physical activity, adjusting medications or insulin, coping with stress or depression and fitting diabetes into your everyday life. Available for both adults and children.
  • Individual Consultations
    We offer individual consultation with a nurse educator and a dietitian that includes a complete assessment of your diabetes control, self-management skills and current management plan.
  • Insulin Starts/Adjustments
    This program will teach you how to make appropriate changes in your insulin regimen based on your food plan, physical activity and blood glucose levels. Offered two times each month, with a one-month follow-up visit.
  • Heart Health
    People with diabetes often have hypertension an high blood cholesterol levels, putting them at risk for heart disease. In this program you'll learn about food choices, lifestyle and medication and other preventive care to keep your heart healthy. Heart Health is designed for people who have a basic understanding of diabetes management and carbohydrate counting.

Counseling

If you or your child has diabetes, you may feel frustrated, angry, depressed or just plain tired of it all. We can help you work through any problems or concerns you have about living with diabetes.

Our counselors have extensive experience in treating the psychological aspects of diabetes, including:

  • Diabetes control issues
  • Emotional adjustment issues
  • Personality problems
  • Eating disorders
  • Family and relationship issues
  • Loneliness or depression
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Sexual concerns
  • Substance abuse issues
  • Other abuse issues
