Progress continued in the year 2001 regarding the development of additional treatment options for the patients served by the Radiation Oncology Unit of the Willmar Cancer Center. Following the installation of a new linear accelerator and simulator in the fall of 2000, software was acquired in 2001 to perform three dimensional treatment planning for our patients. This technology continues to advance our ability to increase the precision of the radiation beam to the tumor being treated. In addition, planning was initiated for a prostate seed implant program late in 2001, with program implementation slated for mid-2002. Planning for the implementation of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) sometime in the future has also been initiated.

The relationship between Rice Memorial Hospital and Minneapolis Radiation Oncology, P.A., remains strong, with Radiation Oncologist John Ling, M.D., continuing to lead the radiation therapy team at the Cancer Center. Minneapolis Radiation Oncology also provides the physics support for the program. The partnership with the Medical Oncologists and other physicians from Affiliated Community Medical Centers also remains strong and is a driving force for continued success within the Willmar Cancer Center. Through the joint efforts of the Rice nurses, radiation therapists and support staff in both the Cancer Center and the Cancer Registry, working with our physician partners, the program was again accredited by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer. This accreditation is in place for three years.

Again this year, I would also like to thank the volunteers who provide countless hours staffing the Cancer Center and providing support for our cancer patients. We are so fortunate to have such a strong volunteer program, which allows us to offer just a little bit extra, in terms of patient contact and support.

The Willmar Cancer Center is continuing to work towards improved access to quality cancer related services as close to home as possible. We appreciate the opportunity to serve area residents needing cancer care in an environment of respect, integrity, compassion and excellence.
