Parkinson's Clinic

The one-day Parkinson's Clinic for persons who have received a medical diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. The clinic provides a complete evaluation of an individual's ability to complete tasks of daily living and offers resources and solutions that can help maintain and improve quality of life.

The individual's day will involve a complete and thorough assessment relating to the following areas which are described in detail below:

  • occupational therapy
  • physical therapy
  • speech therapy
  • social services
  • pharmacy
  • food and nutrition
  • nursing
  • massage therapy

Family and friends are welcome to attend the clinic with the individual. Morning snack and lunch are provided.

Occupational Therapy Assessment

  • upper extremity range of motion
  • upper extremity strength
  • rigidity
  • sensation
  • coordination
  • tremor
  • reciprocal motion upper extremities
  • hand writing
  • hand prehensions; isolated finger control
  • grip strength
  • activities of daily living tasks
  • adaptive equipment needs
  • bed mobility
  • cognitive skills

Physical Therapy Assessment

  • moving, walking and balance
  • flexibility: neck range of motion, shoulder range of motion, ankle motion
  • rigidity: feeling for resistance with should, hip and ankle movements
  • general mobility, including getting in and out of bed or chair
  • balance: sitting and standing balance activities included in a brief balance assessment called the Tinetti's Balance test
  • gait: walking assessment
  • posture: standing and sitting

Speech Therapy Assessment

  • changes in voice and speech
  • assessing swallowing and any difficulties

Social Services Assessment

  • living environment
  • support groups and systems
  • available community resources
  • financial resources
  • adjustment to illness /diagnosis

Pharmacy Assessment

  • review of medication regimen
  • assessment of compliance
  • discussion of side effects
  • discussion of over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements

Food and Nutrition Assessment

  • calcium intake
  • fluid intake
  • fiber intake
  • weight loss

Nursing Assessment

  • Parkinson's disease education
  • early signs and symptoms
  • physical changes
  • pain
  • sleep pattern changes
  • bowel and bladder changes
  • sexuality changes
