Wheelchair Evaluation Program

A wheelchair assessment through Rice Rehab Center can help you choose a wheelchair that is safe, comfortable, and the right fit for your special needs. An assessment may also be done of an existing wheelchair to help determine if it is meeting the user's needs.

Rice has a unique Pressure Mapping System that can also help determine if the user is at risk for developing pressure wounds in the current wheelchair.

There are no age requirements or restrictions for an assessment.

We offer a team approach to wheelchair assessments to best meet the needs of wheelchair users.

In addition to the wheelchair user, team members may include:

  • Rice Rehab occupational therapist
  • Rice Home Medical assistive device technician
  • Gillette Children's adaptive equipment practitioner
  • Caregivers and family members who can provide additional information about how the wheelchair fits into the user's daily activities and environment.

The assessment looks at:

  • Transportation options
  • Home environment
  • Mobility within the community
  • Participation and interest in public / external activities
  • Are replacement parts or repairs needed
  • Adaptive seating changes and updates

For individuals looking at the purchase of a wheelchair, assessment also includes:

  • is a wheelchair needed
  • what type of chair best suits the person's size and function
  • current and future mobility needs
  • level of independence
  • activities of daily living skills
