Your Hospital Bed
Hospital beds are electronically operated. Your nurse will show you how to work your bed properly. Your hospital bed may be narrower or higher than your bed at home. The mattress is specially designed to ensure your skin is protected during your stay. Bed controls, nurse call button, and TV controls are located on the top panel of your side rail.
Calling Your Nurse
A button to call your nurse is located at your bedside. When you press that button, a light flashes above your door and an alert is sent to the patient support area. This calls your nurse’s wireless phone and a staff member will respond to your call as quickly as possible.
Leaving the Unit
If you want to leave the unit, please check with your nurse so the staff knows where you can be reached.
All rooms in the hospital are individually heated and air-conditioned. If your room temperature is not comfortable, please tell the staff to ensure you are comfortable during your stay.
Visitors can be good medicine for patients. Family members and friends are welcome to visit at any time unless otherwise specified. The hospital doors are locked at 8:00pm. After 8:00pm, your visitors may enter through the Emergency Services entrance. They will need to check in with the staff at the emergency desk and are given a visitor pass.
There are nearby hotels for relatives and visitors who are from out-of-town. A map and list of hotels can be found at the admissions desk, information desk, and at nursing stations. Also, Rice Memorial Hospital offers a limited number of Sleep Rooms that may be reserved for patients and their families at a low cost.
The interfaith chapel is located on the main floor of the hospital. Patients, family, and staff are welcome to visit the chapel for prayer and reflection. If you would like a chaplain, your minister, or spiritual leader to visit, please tell your nurse or call the Chaplaincy Office at 320.231.4211.
Community Health Library
The Community Health Library has health-related books, newsletters, magazines, videos, and online health resources. The library has a fax machine and computer access so visitors can check email or do personal business while visiting Rice. Internet access is also available for personal laptop computers. The Library is located in the Main Lobby, next to the Gift Shop and across from the main elevators. The Library is open 9:00am to 5:00pm, as staffing allows.
The Gift Shop, staffed by volunteers, is located in the Main Lobby. It is open daily during the weekdays, as staffing allows. The hours are posted on the door. It has a variety of gift items, jewelry, greeting cards, stamps, stationery, candy, toiletries, flowers, balloons, and plants. Flowers and balloons are available for purchase at the registration desk whenever the Gift Shop is closed. All monies are used to provide additional programs and services for Rice departments. Gifts, Balloons and Flowers for Patients
Visitors should check with the nurse before bringing gifts such as non-latex balloons, flowers, food, and beverages to patients. Only Mylar balloons are allowed in any of our facilities.
Letters and packages for patients are delivered each morning by volunteers. Letters and parcels that arrive after you have been discharged are forwarded to your home. Outgoing mail may be left at the patient support area or given to a volunteer.
The West Central Tribune is delivered to your room each morning, compliments of the Hospital Auxiliary. There are newspaper vending machines for other newspapers on the first level by the Community Health Library.
Some motels provide shuttle service to and from the hospital. A Care Cab Wheelchair Transport and Central Community Transit (CCT) are also available to provide transportation for patients. You should call a day before you need the service. Call 320.235.9720 to schedule Care Cab or 320.214.7433 for the CCT bus.

The Medical Staff
Your attending physician, together with a multi-disciplinary team, is responsible for managing your care while you are in the hospital.
The Nursing Team
A team of professional registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nursing assistants, provides twenty-four hour nursing care. Please feel free to talk to your nurse or the department director if you have any questions.
Chaplaincy services are available to meet your spiritual needs, including pastoral counseling, visitation, sacraments, and ethics consults involving difficult treatment and end-of-life decisions. Your priest, minister, rabbi or other spiritual leader may visit you while you are here. Because of patient privacy rules, we ask that you inform your place of worship if you would like a visit while hospitalized.
The hospital chapel is open to everyone at all times. It is a peaceful, non-denominational space located on the main floor. From the lobby, walk past the main elevators and turn right. Follow the sign to the chapel on your left.
Patients and families are sometimes faced with difficult decisions concerning the ethics of medical treatment under a specific situation. Recognizing that values differ and conflicts may arise, the Rice Hospital Ethics Committee is available for consultations.Learn more about Ethical Considerations
A chaplain is also available and on-call 24 hours a day. Ask for assistance from hospital staff, or dial 320.231.4211 or the hospital operator at extension 0.
Care Management staff are assigned to each patient care area. They are trained to help patients and family members with financial, social, and emotional problems that relate to illness or hospitalization. Members of the department work with patients and families to help deal with long-term illnesses and therapies, and are involved in discharge planning. Care Management staff provide care for patients in the inpatient areas as well as in outpatient programs of Rice Hospital.
Your room is cleaned daily by a member of the housekeeping staff. If you need Housekeeping to return to your room for any reason, please tell your nurse.
Volunteers donate many hours of service to the hospital. They add to the services of the hospital staff in many ways and can be identified by their teal jackets and name tags. If you are interested in volunteering in the hospital or at Rice Care Center, please call Human Resources at 320.231.4200. Persons interested in volunteering for Rice Hospice may call 320.231.4433.
There are other departments, such as Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy, Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy, and Respiratory Care that work with nursing.
If you need help paying your bill, you may talk to a financial counselor to see if you qualify for financial assistance, such as Medicaid or other federal, state, or local benefits coverage. The counselor can also see if you qualify for a Rice grant, an uninsured discount, or a payment plan. Patient Grievance Procedure
Patients who feel their rights have been violated or that the quality of patient care has been unacceptable have a mechanism to state their grievance. The exact procedure is addressed in the pamphlet entitled “Patient Bill of Rights” which is available in the patient hospital brochure and can be requested from the administrative secretary by calling 320.231.4228.
If you are 18 or older and mentally competent, you have the right to make decisions about your medical treatment. If you want to control decisions about your health care, even if you are unable to make or state them yourself, you will need an Advance Directive. An Advance Directive contains your wishes if you lose the ability to make decisions for yourself. Download the document here, or request a copy from your nurse or social worker.
The Ethics Committee is made up of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, hospital board, administration, and community members who offer help in reaching decisions with difficult medical issues or end-of-life decisions. A consult from the Ethics Committee may offer an advisory recommendation, but it does not make treatment decisions. To contact the Ethics Committee, or request an ethics consult, call the hospital chaplain via the hospital switchboard at extension “0” or Administration at 320.231.4228.
A telecommunications device is available to help hearing-impaired patients or patients who want to communicate with a hearing-impaired relative or friend. Arrangements can also be made to have a person who uses sign language help a hearing impaired or deaf patient.
The hospital has access to interpretation services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for our patients who do not speak English. If you wish to have a foreign language interpreter, please ask a staff person.
Health Insurance Counseling Program
The Health Insurance Counseling Program (HICP) is a free and confidential resource to assist you in answering your insurance and healthcare billing questions, whether or not you receive care at Rice Hospital
- Volunteers are available Tuesday from 9:00am to 11:00am and Thursdays from 12:30pm to 2:00pm.
- Their office is located on the main floor of the hospital.
Hospice is available to individuals and their families who face terminal illness.
Rice Health Foundation
Rice Health Foundation was created as a charitable non-profit organization to assist Rice Memorial Hospital in carrying out its healing mission. Willmar Regional Cancer Center
The Willmar Regional Cancer Center, affiliated with the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute® provides west central Minnesota with integrated cancer care, including: diagnostic and surgical services, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and complementary therapies and support. Fully accredited and approved by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer, Willmar Regional Cancer Center is located at Rice Hospital.
Rice Regional Dental Clinic
The Kidney Dialysis Care Center at Rice Memorial Hospital opened in 1966. The multidisciplinary team helps patients begin and maintain a dialysis care program. For more information, call 320.231.4235.
When you and your doctor decide you are ready to leave the hospital, a discharge order will be written. You may want to make arrangements with a family member or friend to help you when it’s time to go home. Your health care team will give you instructions about your care after you are out of the hospital. If you have questions about your diet, activities, or other matters, please ask.
When You Are Ready to Leave
Collect all of your belongings and double-check closets and drawers. If you have anything stored in the hospital safe, the nurses will assist you in getting those items. A member of the hospital staff will escort you to the front entrance and help you into the car.

Lifeline Emergency Response System
Lifeline is a personal emergency response system that calls for medical help at the touch of a button. For information about Lifeline services, call the Hospice Office at 320.231.4450.
Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation
If you are a heart patient, the Cardiac Rehab team – specialized in the management of cardiac care – will monitor and evaluate your care and progress. For more information, call 320.231.8770.
Rice Care Center and Therapy Suites
Rice Care Center and Therapy Suites at Rice Care are skilled nursing facilities offering residential and transitional care. Transitional medical care, along with skilled rehabilitation therapy, allows many residents to return home when they’ve achieved their rehabilitation goals. For more information, call 320.214.2700.
Rice Home Medical Equipment
Rice Home Medical offers a full range of home medical products and equipment with four retail locations: Willmar, Glenwood, Redwood Falls, and Madison. Equipment and supplies can be delivered to your home throughout west central Minnesota. Home medical equipment includes oxygen systems, nebulizers, wheelchairs, hospital beds, walkers, bath chairs, bath benches, bath tub rails, and more. Rice Hospice Care
Rice Hospice provides care for terminally ill patients and their loved ones. They offer a team approach to care which deals with the physical, spiritual, psychological, and social needs of patients and families. Rice Rehabilitation Center
When going home from the hospital, a person may need on-going therapy services to continue to improve their physical and cognitive functioning. Rice Rehabilitation Center provides wide-ranging outpatient therapy services performed by competent, caring, and skilled staff. Therapy services include occupational, physical, respiratory, and speech therapies. The staff puts together personal treatment plans to help people reach maximum independence.
